Hace poco más de un año nos sorprendimos al leer la siguiente nota en internet:

RoboCop regresa y sí, MGM Studios está planeando una nueva película.

Un radiante Edward Neumeier hablaba con los medios del Festival Internacional de Cine de Barbados (BIFF 2018), confesándole a los fans que él había estado escribiendo un nuevo guion para un film de RoboCop, que aparentemente iba a ignorar las secuelas escritas por Frank Miller que fueron dirigidas por Irvin Kershner (RoboCop 2, 1990) y Fred Dekker (RoboCop 3, 1992)

El artículo me sorprendió. Yo era consciente de que el señor Neumeier estaba trabajando en un nuevo guion, pero no sospechaba que era una nueva historia de RoboCop.

Le comenté entonces que había encontrado su entrevista para Zeitgeist Magazine y que era mi deber publicarla en los grupos de Robofans. Edward me dijo que invirtió 9 meses en ese proyecto, que era secreto y que no podía informarle a nadie del mismo hasta haber terminado el primer borrador del guion.

Una vez terminado el primer borrador, la noticia se esparció rápidamente y unos meses después, tenemos una nueva noticia: El nombre de esta película es RoboCop Returns y ya tenía director, el sudafricano Neill Blomkamp, famoso por District 9 (2009) y Chappie (2015). Sin embargo, no todas las noticias fueron buenas, al darnos cuenta de que Neill y el guionista Justin Rhodes (quien actualmente está trabajando en Terminator Dark Fate) estaban re-escribiendo el guión que a Neumeier le había costado mantener en secreto durante casi un año.

Neill Blomkamp sugiere el nombre de Peter Weller para su participación en el film y habla maravillas de Paul Verhoeven en las entrevistas. Sin embargo, el nombre de Nancy Allen, quien fuera la coprotagonista de Peter Weller y Robert Burke en la saga original de RoboCop, no figura en ninguna de sus declaraciones.

Una vez más, como fan femenina de la saga de RoboCop, siento la frustración de ver como el personaje de Anne Lewis, sigue sin tomarse en serio. Me comunico directamente con Nancy Allen, solo para corroborar lo que ya sospechaba: Nadie se ha puesto en contacto con ella para la producción.

Los Robofans realizamos una petición online formal para traer de vuelta a Nancy a la saga, pero no obtenemos respuesta de Neill Blomkamp. Sin embargo, algunos bloggeros notan nuestro esfuerzo por mantener la presencia femenina en la franquicia y comienzan a aparecer artículos que tachan de “sexista” la pre-producción, que no quiere dar respuesta a si la oficial Anne Lewis o si la actriz Nancy Allen serán incluidas en la misma.

Los fans realizamos una petición online formal para traer de vuelta a Nancy Allen a la saga, pero no hemos obtenido respuesta.

Nancy Allen, finalmente decide hacer unas declaraciones en el programa de radio podcast Podcasting Them Softly, donde habla de RoboCop Returns y como está abierta a participar en ella.

Aun después de esas declaraciones, Neill Blomkamp sigue ignorando la petición. Curiosamente, Neill quien había estado jugando un poco con los fans de RoboCop al compartir publicaciones relacionadas con las películas, comienza a borrar toda evidencia de RoboCop en sus redes sociales.

Más tarde se extiende el rumor de que Peter Weller ha rechazado participar en RoboCop Returns. Cuando es preguntado por ello en la Comic con de Tokio en Diciembre de 2018, el señor Weller no dice nada concreto al respecto.

Para acallar rumores, Edward Neumeier tiene la difícil tarea de entrar al rescate y da una sorprendente entrevista a HN Entertainment en Enero de este año, en la que admite públicamente que su guion no está siendo re-escrito, directamente lo han ignorado y el equipo Rhodes-Blomkamp están creando una nueva historia.

Con gran diplomacia, Neumeier nos informa que espera que Neill pueda lograr su objetivo, seguir el estilo de Verhoeven con este nuevo film.

Los rumores sobre el primer guion que fue entregado a MGM por parte de Neumeier, indican que la historia era una variante de Corporate Wars, el guion desarrollado por él y Michael Miner a finales de los 80, que fue rechazado por Orion Studios en aquella época por la huelga de escritores. Otro rumor apunta a que, aunque en la original Corporate Wars, Anne Lewis no figuraba, en esta nueva versión sí participaría.

Neill Blomkamp, quien está trabajando en un cortometraje basado en el videojuego Anthem, no ofrece declaraciones concretas sobre RoboCop Returns, sólo sigue mencionando a Paul Verhoeven como un modelo a seguir y, a pesar de que Edward Neumeier habla respetuosamente de él en sus entrevistas, Blomkamp no tiene una sola palabra de admiración o reconocimiento al creador original de la franquicia.

Neumeier había comentado anteriormente “Neill fue el único director que llamó” y eso fue lo que puso la producción en movimiento.

Una vez más, RoboCop parece estar atrapado en la verdadera guerra corporativa que comenzó cuando Orion Studios estaba en la quiebra, allá por principios de los 90, y creyeron que apurar la tercera secuela de RoboCop sería una solución financiera.

Aunque MGM Studios tiene los derechos de RoboCop, Sony Pictures también tiene poder sobre la franquicia.

Desgraciadamente RoboCop 3 es recordada mayormente como un fracaso financiero, ya que el guion, la falta de Peter Weller, la eliminación del personaje de Anne Lewis y los errores de dirección, causaron un gran descontento entre los fans.

Edward Neumeier nos comenta que aunque MGM Studios tiene los derechos de RoboCop, Sony Pictures también tiene poder sobre la franquicia. Sony, en el 2014, quiso re-lanzar la saga a manos del director José Padilha, creando un remake que fracasó entre el público y sólo recaudó dinero fuera de Estados Unidos.

El nombre de RoboCop vende. Mientras se siga sacrificado la historia original y a sus personajes, mientras los estudios sigan la guerra corporativa para tratar de ordeñar el más dinero posible en nombre del personaje, sus seguidores estaremos en pie de guerra pidiendo que se escuchen nuestras peticiones y opiniones, ya que esta es una batalla que tiene más de 25 años.

A los estudios que controlan la marca RoboCop se les olvida el poder mediático que ahora tienen los fans con las redes sociales y como ahora hay films que se convierten en “fan edits” antes de salir a la luz, por todas las opiniones que los seguidores de una saga vierten sobre una producción antes de esta sea exhibida en los cines.

THE REAL CORPORATE WARS BEHIND ROBOCOP RETURNS

A little over a year ago we were surprised to read the following note on the internet:

RoboCop returns and yes, MGM Studios is planning a new movie.

A radiant Edward Neumeier spoke to the media at the Barbados International Film Festival (BIFF 2018), telling fans he had been writing a new script for a RoboCop film , which apparently was going to ignore the previous sequels written by Frank Miller that were directed by Irvin Kershner ( RoboCop 2 , 1990) and Fred Dekker ( RoboCop 3 , 1992)

Once the first draft was finished, the news spread quickly and a few months later, we get incoming news:

The tentative name of this film is RoboCop Returns and it already had a director, South African Neill Blomkamp, ​​famous for District 9 (2009) and Chappie ( 2015) . However, not all the news was good, as we realized that Neill and screenwriter Justin Rhodes (who is currently working on Terminator Dark Fate) were rewriting the script that Neumeier had to struggled to keep secret for almost a year…

Once again, as a female fan of the RoboCop franchise, I feel the frustration of seeing how the character of Anne Lewis, is still not being taken seriously by the production. 

I directly communicate with Nancy Allen, only to corroborate what I already suspected: No one has contacted her for the production.

The Robofans made a formal online request to bring Nancy back into the Robouniverse, but sadly not a single response from Neill Blomkamp has been given. However, some bloggers noticed our effort to maintain the female presence in the franchise and some articles that start pointing at the production as “sexist” came to surface, as the Studios haven’t really given any response whether the character of Anne Lewis or actress Nancy Allen will be included in the upcoming film.

The fans made a formal online request to bring Nancy Allen back into the saga, but we have not received a response.

Nancy Allen finally decides to make public statements on the podcast radio show, Podcasting Them Softly where she talks about RoboCop Returns and how she is open to participate in it.

Even after Nancy’s public declarations, Neill Blomkamp continues to ignore the petition. Interestingly, Neill who had been teasing the RoboCop fans by sharing publications related to the movies begins to erase almost all evidence of RoboCop on his social media accounts.

Later on, the rumor that Peter Weller had refused to participate in RoboCop Returns was spread across the internet. However, when he is questioned about it at the Tokyo Comic con in December 2018, Mr. Weller does not say anything consistent about the subject.

To quell rumors, Edward Neumeier has the difficult task of coming to the rescue and gives a surprising interview to HN Entertainment in January of this year, in which he publicly admits that his script is not being rewritten, they have directly ignored it and the team Rhodes-Blomkamp are creating a new story.

With great diplomacy, Neumeier informs us that he hopes that Neill can achieve his goal, which is following the Verhoeven directing’s style with this new film.

The rumors about the first script that was delivered to MGM by Neumeier, indicate that the story was a variant of Corporate Wars, the script developed by him and Michael Miner in the late 80’s, which was rejected by Orion Studios due to a writers’ strike that happened at the time. 

Another rumor suggests that, although in the original Corporate Wars, Anne Lewis did not feature; she was indeed included in this new version.

Neill Blomkamp, ​​who is working on a short film based on the videogame Anthem, does not offer concrete statements about RoboCop Returns and just keeps mentioning Paul Verhoeven as a role model and, although Edward Neumeier speaks respectfully of him in his interviews, Blomkamp does not have a single word of admiration or recognition to the original creator of the franchise.

Neumeier had previously commented «Neill was the only director who called” and that was what put the production in motion.

Once again, RoboCop seems to be stuck in the real corporate wars that began when Orion Studios was bankrupt, back in the early 90s, and they believed that rushing the third Robosequel would be a financial solution to their money problems.

Although MGM Studios owns the RoboCop’s rights, Sony Pictures also has power over the franchise.

Unfortunately RoboCop 3 is remembered mostly as a financial failure, since the script, the lack of Peter Weller, the elimination of the character of Anne Lewis and the errors of direction, caused great discontent among the fans.

Edward Neumeier tells us that although MGM Studios owns the RoboCop’s rights, Sony Pictures has also some power over the franchise. Sony, in 2014, wanted to re-launch the saga at the hands of director José Padilha, by creating a remake that failed among the public and only raised money outside the United States.

The name of RoboCop still sells. While the original story and its characters continue to be sacrificed, while the Studios keep up this corporate war to try to milk as much money as possible from the character’s name, the RoboCop’s hardcore fans will be up in arms asking for our requests and opinions to be heard, since this is a battle that has lasted more than 25 years.

The studios that are in control of the RoboCop brand forget the mediatic power that fans have now with the social media networks and it is common to see how certain films become «fan edits» before they come into light, usually due to the online opinions that the followers of certain saga poured over on a production before it was displayed in theaters.
