The Black Butterfly, The Theatrical Performance

Entonces ¿A quién llamar?

THE BLACK BUTTERFLY, THE THEATRICAL PERFORMANCE

The original novel in which screenwriter Edward Neumeier and actress Nancy Allen coexist again outside the RoboCop world

January 2018. It seemed that the RoboCop fans had good news about a new installment of the saga, as announced by Edward Neumeier at the Barbados International Film Festival (BIFF 2018): RoboCop Returns.

That same script that Ed wrote, was unfortunately passed on by MGM Studios later that year and according to Michael Miner, co-writer of Neumeier, the studios had thought that the story they had developed was too ambitious. The movie is still in pre-production mode, that’s all we know at the moment.

However, personally, it didn’t occur to me that Edward Neumeier could star in another alternative story outside RoboCop that same year, but a succession of interesting facts led for this to happen.

For a while, I had maintained an online platform to entertain Mr. Neumeier with images or creative stories that could be of his interest (Beyond my RoboCop fanfictions). Capturing his attention was quite constructive for me.

It was precisely the publicity stills of the BIFF 2018, the ones that awoke my crazy imagination, building a whole story of ‘roleplay’ where he and I were protagonists: ‘The Barbados Fantasy’.

In this story Ed and I had no names, it was just him and me in an alternative universe: I was the elegant escort or lady who offered services (sexy ones, beyond innocent company) and he was the attractive man of mature age and of certain social power, the one who decides to purchase the services of the younger woman in red dress who sits at his table the night they meet in a bar.

This story somehow evolved beyond other short writings that I had prepared for Neumeier and, suddenly, the characters demanded names … and background stories.

I communicated to Ed, formally in December 2018, that I had decided to transform that private story of ‘roleplay’ into a complete novel, subsequently I worked in 2019 to make that possible.

The name of the novel evolved into The Black Butterfly (La Mariposa Negra, a euphemism used in Mexico for girls who work at nightclubs), since “The Black Butterfly” is the nightclub, where, Matt L. and Anna Sirena get to know each other.

We stopped being Edward Neumeier and Eva Rojano to become fictional characters and beyond the complicated romance that the protagonists could develop within the plot, more characters kept joining the story. There were villains and, suddenly, I needed cops that could fight them.

So who to call? To my favorite police officer, of course. I had toyed with the idea that the police sergeant of the novel was a female and that she became an alternative version of Anne Lewis combined with nowadays Nancy Allen.

Nancy Allen

I had been sketching for months, concept art illustrations with the aim to request Nancy Allen’s participation in RoboCop Returns to MGM Studios as Anne Lewis from a dystopian future (Of the near future) in which she never died at the hands of the Rehabs and she, instead, is now a veteran police officer of a higher rank, that had aged next to her partner, RoboCop.

MGM Studios has not given an answer to this request and in the middle of my frustration as a graphic artist, I decided that this police lady could exist in The Black Butterfly as an extension of Anne Lewis and my friend of so many years, the real Nancy Allen. “Sergeant Collins” was the final name for her.

The Black Butterfly, therefore, is a story focused on an adult audience, people who grew up with the Pop culture of the 80’s and 90’s. Since its content includes adult situations of a sexual nature, violence, and strong language, much in the style of Verhoeven and Neumeier himself.

So this book, the first installment of three that I have planned, The Black Butterfly, the Theatrical Performance, turned out to be the most elaborated tribute (it took me a year to finish the first book) that I’ve come up with for the RoboCop real-life stars, who inspired me to create my own creative universe outside the world of RoboCop fans, but that somehow connects with it.

I’m not sure what the future holds for Ed Neumeier as a working producer for Sony Studios / MGM Studios, or for Nancy as a partner of RoboCop, in the RoboCop Returns probable next film, but I have assured both of them that they will prevail in my books as fictional characters.

The e-book is written in English and is available on Amazon Kindle. Paperback editions are available too, and the book is free to borrow for Kindle Unlimited members:

And for the readers of my RoboCop Enhanced Reality fanfiction, we’re currently running a mini-contest where they can win a free e-copy, they only have to answer 5 questions about it, for more information, read our Facebook page.

This is my first adventure as a published writer beyond RoboCop, in which I have decided to take my favorite “Robostars” on board. Wish me success.
